Dockside Charters:
Ships are sometimes chartered and left in port the entire time for a number of reasons. Sometimes events are held in cities that do not have adequate hotel space such as the Super Bowl in Jacksonville or the Winter Olympics in Vancouver or the Summer Olympics in Brazil. In these cases, ships are chartered and left at the dock to provide additional housing or for companies to enable their employees to attend the event. In other cases, a company may book an exhibition at a convention center and charter a ship for their employees, leaving the vessel in port for the convention, but also using the ship for a pre or post-convention cruise. And ships have been chartered to house employees in emergencies such as Hurricanes Andrew and Katrina or Sandy in the northeast because hotels and homes had been destroyed.
